Patio Umbrella Waterdrop

Reflected clearly in this water drop is the red patio umbrella–upside down of course.
People have asked me why objects appear upside down in a water drop. From Forfas 2010 comes this explanation: In this case, the drop of water is acting just like an objective lens found in a telescope or a pair of binoculars. The water drop is shaped like a convex lens, which means that it’s thicker at the centre than at the edges. This shape causes light from any object below to become focused at a particular point. This is known as the focal point. However, because of the way the light is bent as it travels through the water drop, the image is upside down once it reaches the focal point. If you move closer to the water, going beyond the focal point, you’ll see that the image is now the right way up but not as well focused.
